The institute’s research is concentrated in two research areas: ‘(Criminal law) interventions’ and ‘Offending and other life domains’. Researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds collaborate in each project within these two main areas. Theoretical issues drive the research, and in each project empirical findings and their normative implications are integrated.

Projects focusing on ‘(Criminal law) interventions’ cover the entire range from interventions on normtransgressing behaviour, from non-interventions by bystanders to small interventions by informal guardians to the heaviest sanction in criminal law, imprisonment.

Within ‘Offending and other life domains’ the reciprocal and possibly spurious association is studied between offending and negative (or positive) outcomes in various other life domains, such as intimate relations, employment careers and health.
